Basseterre
Basseterre is the southwest-coast capital of St Kitts, defined by its port, government quarter, and historic commercial streets.
Overview
Basseterre sits on the southwest coast of St Kitts around the main ferry and cruise-port waterfront, a short drive north of Frigate Bay and south of the island's central hills. As the national capital, it anchors the island's primary civic and transport corridor.
The town functions as the main administrative and commercial center of St Kitts and Nevis, concentrating government buildings, banking, retail, and day-to-day services in a compact urban core. The broader Basseterre Area uses the capital as its anchor, but the town page remains focused on the port-side city itself.
Basseterre stands apart from other towns because it combines a working port district with one of the federation's most recognizable historic street patterns. Independence Square, the ferry terminal, and the surrounding commercial blocks make it the clearest urban reference point on St Kitts.
