The St Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC)

St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC) is the sole public electricity provider serving the island of St. Kitts in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Established on August 1, 2011, following its transition from the former St. Kitts Electricity Department (SKED), SKELEC operates as a government-owned public utility responsible for power generation, transmission, and distribution across the island.

With an installed generation capacity of approximately 48.9 megawatts (MW) at its Needsmust Power Plant, supported by 15 diesel generators, SKELEC reliably meets peak electricity demands ranging between 20–28 MW and maintains a stable baseload of approximately 14.6–16.2 MW. The company continues to enhance grid stability and operational efficiency through strategic upgrades, equipment modernization, and capacity expansion initiatives.

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, the company is advancing renewable energy development, including the construction of the Caribbean’s largest solar generation and battery storage system. This landmark renewable energy project is designed to supply 30–35% of St. Kitts’ baseload energy requirements over the next two decades while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
