About This Activity

Situated in Charlestown on the island of Nevis, near the historic Bath Hotel, the Horatio Nelson Museum is dedicated to the life and career of Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758–1805). The museum highlights Nelson’s association with Nevis during his service in the Caribbean in the 1780s, when he was stationed in the Leeward Islands.

In 1787, Nelson married Frances “Fanny” Nisbet, a Nevis-born widow, at Montpelier Estate on the island. The museum documents this period of his life alongside his subsequent naval career, which culminated in the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he was mortally wounded.

The collection includes portraits, naval documents, maps, ceramics, busts, and other memorabilia relating to Nelson and the late 18th-century naval world. Exhibits also provide contextual information about Nevis during the Georgian era, offering insight into the island’s historical environment at the time of Nelson’s residence.

Compact in scale yet historically focused, the museum presents a factual overview of Nelson’s Caribbean connections and his enduring significance in British naval history.
